Softwood Gates

Our softwood wooden gates are made from responsibly sourced Scandinavian Redwood. The timber we choose is of the highest quality – known in the joinery trade as ‘unsorted timber’, and provides unrivalled strength and durability.

The pressure treatment given to all our softwood gates provides the timber with a natural looking green hue which, over time, fades to a soft silver tint. We do however still recommend a good quality stain treatment which protects the timber from wind, rain, and sun damage.

Scandinavian Redwood gates are a fantastic, cost-effective way to enhance your garden or property entrance. Please contact us for more details or to book a quote for your wooden gate installation in the Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, or Hemel Hempstead area.

Iroko Westons

Hardwood Gates

At Crocketts Gates we use a specific type of hardwood for our bespoke hardwood gates; Iroko. This hardwood is different in appearance.

Iroko is an African hardwood, very popular for outdoor use including boat building, as it is strong and durable. It is because of this that we believe it’s the best type of wood for gates. We treat all our Iroko gates with a base coat of Teak Oil with UV filters, giving a beautiful golden brown colour – a stunning and unique look for any garden or entrance gate. Iroko requires regular oiling to maintain the golden hue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Wooden Gates

    1. Should I choose hardwood or softwood for my bespoke wooden gates?

The choice between hardwood and softwood depends on your budget, aesthetic preferences, and the gate’s intended purpose.

For our softwood gates, we use premium Scandinavian redwood. It is an incredibly durable, cost-effective option that is pressure-treated to protect against rot, initially giving it a natural green hue that matures into a beautiful soft silver.

For our hardwood gates, we use African Iroko. Iroko is renowned for its exceptional strength and density, making it one of the best woods for driveway gates in the UK. It offers a stunning golden-brown colour and provides superior resistance to the unpredictable British weather.

    2. Do you offer wooden gate installation in Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, and Hemel Hempstead?

Yes, we provide a complete, end-to-end service from our fully equipped workshop in Askett. Our expert team carries out site visits, builds your made-to-measure wooden gates, and provides professional gate installation within a 25-mile radius. This perfectly covers homes and businesses in Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, Hemel Hempstead, and the surrounding Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire villages.

    3. Are your wooden gates made to measure, and can you accommodate uneven driveways?

Absolutely. Unlike off-the-shelf options, every wooden gate from Crocketts Gates is 100% bespoke and crafted to your exact specifications. During our site survey, we take accurate measurements – checking for ground slopes, overhanging obstructions, and the required clearance for hinges. Whether you need custom garden gates for a narrow side alley or heavy-duty wooden driveway gates for a sloped entrance, we build them to fit flawlessly.

    4. How should I maintain my wooden gates to protect them from the British weather?

Because timber is a natural product, proper treatment is vital to prevent seasonal warping and extend the life of your gates.

    • Softwood (Scandinavian Redwood): While our softwood gates are pressure-treated, we highly recommend applying a good-quality stain treatment regularly to protect the timber from wind, rain, and UV damage.
    • Hardwood (Iroko): We supply our Iroko gates pre-treated with a base coat of teak oil containing UV filters. To maintain its rich, golden-brown hue and weather resistance, it will require regular re-oiling (ideally twice a year, before and after winter).

    5. Can bespoke wooden gates be automated for electric opening?

Yes, wooden gates can be automated, but they must be specifically designed and constructed to handle the mechanical stress. Standard wooden gates are usually too thin to withstand the push-and-pull forces of electric motors. If you are looking for automated wooden gates in Milton Keynes or Aylesbury, please let us know during your initial enquiry. We will ensure the frame and timber thickness are heavily reinforced to operate safely and reliably with an electric gate system.

    6. Do I need planning permission for new wooden driveway gates in the UK?

In most cases, replacing an existing gate with one of the same height does not require planning permission. However, if you are installing a new wooden driveway gate, standard UK permitted development rules state that you do not need planning permission, provided the gate is:

    • Under 1 metre high if it is situated next to a vehicular highway or footpath.
    • Under 2 metres high if it is located elsewhere on your property.

Exceptions apply if your property is a listed building or located within a conservation area. We always recommend checking with your local council in Buckinghamshire or Hertfordshire if you are unsure.

    7. How long does it take from ordering to the installation of my wooden gates?

Because every gate is handcrafted in our workshop to guarantee the highest joinery standards, lead times can vary depending on the complexity of your design and the time of year. Once you request a free quote and we finalise the measurements, we will provide you with a clear and prompt timeframe for manufacturing and installation.
