Hardwood Gates

At Crocketts we use two Hardwoods that are very different in appearance, both of which have been sourced from FSC registered forests.

All Crocketts gates made from Hardwood are traditionally made - framed, ledged and braced, mortise and tenoned and dowelled using traditional wooden dowels to provide strength, durability and attractive attention to detail.

Iroko gate

Iroko is an African hardwood that is used widely for outdoor use – it is even used in boat building. Iroko creates gates of a golden brown hue that can be mistaken for Mahogany and we believe it is more suitable for gate making than similar hardwoods such as Idigbo or Sapele.

Iroko gate

Our Iroko gates are given a base coat of Teak Oil with UV filters that gives the gates a golden sheen. This treatment will need to be reapplied by the client when necessary or alternatively the Iroko can be left to silver over time.

Oak gate

Our Oak gates are created using first grade, European air dried Oak that has been naturally seasoned for at least four years. Oak is considered the king of timber – having been used for centuries by craftsmen to create structures that will stand the test of time.

Our Oak gates are supplied in their natural state but can be treated with Tung Oil if requested. Oak over time seasons to a white/silver appearance but prior to this can appear dirty as the timber’s tanning in the timber washes out - this is totally natural and is not detrimental to the strength of the gates. Oak also has a tendency to settle which can lead to the appearance of cracks (known as checking) but that is the beauty of Oak!
